You reach for your phone, your glass of water or the lamp switch while lying down, half asleep. A bedside table that is the wrong height turns that into a small daily annoyance: you stretch up over the edge, or you bend down into a gap.

The rule: level with the mattress top

The usual advice from interior designers is simple. The top of the bedside table should be about level with the top of your mattress, or at most 5 to 10 cm higher. Some say stay within 5 cm either way. Most bedside tables are around 50 to 70 cm tall, but the number on the shop page matters less than how high your mattress sits.

Why level? When you lie on your side, your hand falls naturally at mattress height. A table at that height lets you slide a hand across without lifting your shoulder. A table a little higher also works, because your hand rises easily; a table well below the mattress asks you to lean out of bed.

Set your mattress height, then drag the green handle on the table (or use the slider). The dashed line is your mattress top; the red mark shows the gap between it and the table top. Scale is approximate.

How to measure your own

You only need a tape measure. Stand beside the bed and measure from the floor to the top of the mattress, pressed down lightly the way it sits when you lie on it, not the top of the bed frame. Then measure the table you have or are considering from the floor to its top surface. The gap between the two numbers is what the playground above shows.

Also measure the space beside the bed. Bedside tables vary a lot in width, and you still need room to get out of bed. Check the width of the table against the wall gap, and check how far a drawer pulls out.

Cheaper fixes than buying a new table

Cosy is not about buying more, so try these first:

When to break the rule

Level is a starting point, not law. If you read with a lamp, a slightly higher table keeps the bulb above your book. If you have trouble getting out of bed, a table you can steady yourself on at a firmer height may matter more than the arm reach. And on a very low platform bed, a matching low table can look calm and balanced even if the surface sits a few centimetres above the mattress. Pick what you will actually reach for.

What to look for

Whatever you spend, the things that matter are the same:
